><span style=""> </span>Keith Bardwell really started all of this. Long story short, this Louisiana judge refused to grant a marriage license in October 2009 to a mixed-race couple because he was concerned for their future children. Bardwell thought that if their children were of mixed races, they would be excluded from both groups. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="line-height: 200%;font-size:100%;" ><span style=""> </span>Suzy Richardson thought this was uncalled for, so she uploaded a portrait of her own happy mixed-race family to Facebook, saying she planned to send it to Bardwell in a Christmas card. Almost immediately, her friends who were also in mixed-race families jumped on board. The niche community, and mixedandhappy.com, was born.</span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="line-height: 200%;font-size:100%;" ><span style=""> </span>The idea went international, and what started out as one mother sticking up for the happiness of her children became a worldwide phenomenon. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="line-height: 200%;font-size:100%;" ><span style=""> </span>“And so it turns out that a bad decision sparked a Facebook status that sparked a movement,” Richardson says on her website. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="line-height: 200%;font-size:100%;" ><span style=""> </span>Bardwell received 130 photos of mixed-racial families from around the world that Christmas. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="line-height: 200%;font-size:100%;" ><span style=""> </span>Richardson said in an interview that she is still defining the role of mixedandhappy.com. </span></p> <p class="MsoNoSpacing" style="line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="line-height: 200%;font-size:100%;" ><span style=""> </span>“We talk about anything and everything mixed-race families would want to talk about,” she said. line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">The <a href="http://www.facebook.com/mixedandhappy">Facebook</a> page also allows readers to connect with one another by sharing family photos, posting on the discussion board and generally showing support and love for Mixed and Happy.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">In this way, the Facebook page is an extension of the website in that it offers readers a place to not only discuss Mixed and Happy stories, but also to bring in outside influences which could possibly serves as <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15101968/IdeaCapture.JPG">story ideas</a>. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Richardson went on to describe how she and the site’s reporters use the Facebook page to attract traffic to the site.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">She says she understands it would be ridiculous to expect people to be able to extensively connect socially on the site when most people already use Facebook to do so.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Therefore, she uses the Facebook page to promote <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15101968/StoriesCapture.JPG">stories</a> on the website.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: 200%; font-family: times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Balance User Generated Content & the News</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Mixed and Happy is unique in that it is dealing with issues that deeply affect people.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">The story about the mixed-race couple being denied a marriage license, a cross burning at a mixed family’s home, how a family is dealing with a transracial adoption: these are all very emotional stories to the authors and the readers.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">When I asked Richardson about how she tries to balance the site’s news stories with content contributed by users (like photos and personal stories), she said it can be difficult.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">As one of the few websites dedicated to mixed-race families and issues, many users expect it to do and be everything.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Richardson said, as an alumna of the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, she has a passion for journalism and wants her site to reflect that commitment. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Part of what Richardson is doing to make sure the site maintains a strong news presence, is to bring in outsiders to help revamp the site.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">For example, she recently found <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15101968/InternCapture.JPG">two</a> <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15101968/InternCapture2.JPG">interns</a> through the College’s Job and Internship Fair.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Bringing in communications students, who are familiar with writing news stories and would do the internship for academic credit, allows her to have contributers who are committed to helping the site grow.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">One issue Richardson discussed was the inability of finding reporters and contributors who would stick around after expressing initial interest.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">“I have to be careful on screening people. In the beginning, I let people write if they wanted to. But while other sites are concerned with getting loads of web hits, in turn gaining money from advertisers, the motive of Mixed and Happy is just to dedicate itself to news and the community for mixed-race families and allow this sometimes overlooked group of people to connect with one another.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">The founder, Suzy Richardson, has a passion for journalism, which helps keep her motivated to run the site.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Though it seems as if there are purposely no ads on the site, Richardson says it’s actually this way because she needs help making it happen.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">She says she is not the most tech-savvy person and is a one man band, basically doing everything on her own when it comes to supervising the site.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">However, she says she, along with the contributors, is in the process of reconstructing the whole face of the website, which will include ad space and ad campaigns in the future.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">With the new interns hired, there may be a sooner change with advertisements being placed on the site.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%;font-family:times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Between now and last week, actually, our group has observed this revamping taking place.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Before, there were multiple links that would link to the same destination, and the links were a little disorganized.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Now, instead of having multiple links at the top of the screen with drop box menus leading to the same page, there are now only designated links entitled “Home,” “About Us,” “Submissions” and “MH Around the World.”</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">A lot of times we may notice that advertisements in newspapers and websites reflect the given content.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Richardson says part of the revamping process will allow people to advertise what they want on the site.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in; line-height: 200%; font-family: times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">But just because there are no ads doesn’t mean there is no traffic.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Richardson says the site actually gets a pretty decent amount of traffic, and the social media outlets are key factors in attracting people.</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Surprisingly, the site attracts many viewers just through simple Google searches, such as “products for mixed hair” or “mixed relationships.”</span><span style=";font-size:100%;" > </span><span style="font-size:100%;">Including advertisements on the site will definitely be a positive change and would probably help to generate some sort of profit in the future.</span></p>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-48075526517578033872011-04-12T10:10:00.000-07:002011-04-12T10:20:44.192-07:00://URLFAN<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2YkJp4-NnEZUEmWkS4hgKmplVMZ-fDhyl4dyec1X8BJcdl1Z2UwBjf84tMIUek1j8WSG68f4K4BaBlFLLN7o763bM3VNtncKSgWutzhfP6u6-_M9Lb2wlI0CJjdsZWqKqU2n6kFvvYvkC/s1600/URL.JPG"><img style="float: left; Through our budgeting model, we allocated tuition to each college. Attached is a spreadsheet that details how much tuition we allocated to each college. At the college level, this money is commingled with state appropriations, so you cannot tell how much tuition is used to pay each faculty member or operating expense. I hope that helps.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px;"><br /></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: black; font-size: 13px; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: rgb(31, 73, 125); font-size: 11pt;">Sincerely,</span></div><div class="im"><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-size: 13px; margin: 0px;"><br /></div><div><div class="MsoNormal" style="color: rgb(102, 102, 102); font-size: 13px; margin: 0px;"><span style="color: rgb(31, 73, 125); font-size: 11pt;"><span class="il" style="background-color: rgb(219, 240, 250); color: rgb(34, 34, 34);"></span>Janine Sikes</span></div></div></div></span>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-44584691071379521112011-04-05T11:01:00.000-07:002011-04-05T11:06:31.797-07:00Resume LinkHere is the Dropbox link to my <a href="http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15101968/shannonparrishresume.pdf">resume</a>.Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-16739380327550423762011-04-02T18:40:00.001-07:002011-04-02T18:40:57.936-07:00Wordled Speeches<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> <w:zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:punctuationkerning/> <w:validateagainstschemas/> <w:saveifxmlinvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:ignoremixedcontent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:alwaysshowplaceholdertext>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:compatibility> <w:breakwrappedtables/> <w:snaptogridincell/> <w:wraptextwithpunct/> <w:useasianbreakrules/> <w:dontgrowautofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:browserlevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:latentstyles deflockedstate="false" latentstylecount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">I think Wordle would be a good tool for making sense of political speeches. <span style=""> </span>Often times, they are filled with jargon and can be difficult to understand if you’re working quickly on deadline.<span style=""> </span>A Wordle of a speech would give a basic outline of some of the main points. <span style=""> </span>Such a visual representation would make the politician’s ideas and thoughts clearer to readers.<span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">Wordle would also be helpful to compare different speeches by the same politician, especially during an election cycle.<span style=""> </span>A series of Wordled speeches by a particular politician would track the issues they’re covering and provide insight to how they may or may not adjust their campaigns during an election cycle. <span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">Along those same lines, a journalist could use Wordled speeches to compare the rhetoric of various politicians from different parties and to compare how different parties members may react to the same event. <span style=""> </span>The New York Times link shows something similar to this. <span style=""> </span>I think the reporter in this case used the Wordled speeches very effectively. <span style=""> </span>Rather than just showing two images and expecting readers to understand what they mean, the reporter gives an explanation of how and why the two images are different. Catherine Rampell writes, “Mr. Bush’s speech was intended to explain and calm anxieties, whereas Mr. Obama’s speech was intended to make the case for significant, permanent policy changes (which perhaps explains Mr. Obama’s relatively greater willingness to use terms like “crisis” and “failure”).”<span style=""> </span>She wraps up the article nicely by trying to include reader comments. </p>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-60139528997146035412011-04-02T18:09:00.000-07:002011-04-02T18:50:00.238-07:00Wordle<span style="font-size:100%;"><span style="font-family: times new roman;">Blog Wordle</span></span><br /><br /><pre id="embed"><a href="http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/3404600/Untitled" title="Wordle: Untitled"><img src="http://www.wordle.net/thumb/wrdl/3404600/Untitled" alt="Wordle: Untitled" style="padding: 4px; border: 1px solid rgb(221, 221, 221);" /></a></pre><br />Resume Wordle<br /><pre id="embed"> <a href="http://www.wordle.net/show/wrdl/3404662/Untitled" title="Wordle: Untitled"><img src="http://www.wordle.net/thumb/wrdl/3404662/Untitled" alt="Wordle: Untitled" style="padding: 4px; border: 1px solid rgb(221, 221, 221);" /></a></pre>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-78037917309175083412011-03-27T06:06:00.000-07:002011-03-27T06:12:39.238-07:00Past Story<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> <w:zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:punctuationkerning/> <w:validateagainstschemas/> <w:saveifxmlinvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:ignoremixedcontent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:alwaysshowplaceholdertext>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:compatibility> <w:breakwrappedtables/> <w:snaptogridincell/> <w:wraptextwithpunct/> <w:useasianbreakrules/> <w:dontgrowautofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:browserlevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:latentstyles deflockedstate="false" latentstylecount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">I first met Marcee Lee Winthrop in March at an open mic night. She and her daughter, Tammy, were sitting in the shadows of The Orange and Brew, anxiously awaiting Marcee’s turn at the mic.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Feeling out of place at a poetry event and in desperate need of a source for my story, I approached Marcee and Tammy’s table. The anxiety that shared their table was welcoming to me, even as I was every bit as anxious as they were. I asked that dreaded reporting icebreaker:</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">“Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">That was months ago. Now I’m no longer the only person banging on Marcee’s door looking to tell her story. And what a story it is.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Marcee’s story of an upward ascent out of poverty is one that reads like a fairy tale.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Impoverished for the last two decades, abandoned by her husband of seven years, and left to be a single mother to her 14-year-old daughter and having to go without many of the things most of us take for granted, she struggled.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">“We flat-lined,” she said. “We were already poor, but now we were indigent.”</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Until one day, a fairy godmother appeared. Though not the kind you would expect. Marcee’s fairy godmother was Marcee.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">“I was on a journey to get out of poverty and it started with a mind change,” she said. Her mindset changed from “I can’t” to “I’ll try” to “I will.”</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">And for the sake of her daughter, she promised that they would be out of poverty by the end of the year, “and I don’t lie to my daughter.” So in January she decided to give it a go. Her New Year’s resolution, she declared, was to lift herself and Tammy above the poverty level.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">And now, with three months left in 2009, Marcee has transformed from a housewife-turned single-mother to something of a local celebrity. With her first book, “Poverty Revolution Part One: Skimming the Surface,” already under her belt and another on the way, Marcee now must try to make time for all the new media engagements.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">In the coming weeks, she’s scheduled to share her work with a women’s studies class, sing for World Peace Day and to participate in a panel on homelessness in Gainesville, FL. At a recent appearance for the University of Florida’s Association of Black Communicators, Marcee’s metamorphosis was on display for students to see. Clutching two crumpled, heavily-scribbled-on sheets of paper, Marcee charmed her audience with inspiring life stories about poverty, happiness, her daughter and a nearly-sold-out book.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Several on-line bookstores carry “Poverty Revolution,” she said, but not amazon.com. “I’m sure I’ll get them,” she laughed. “They’ll get the second edition.”</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">She even came with a personal photographer. David, she says, was a student recommended by the Department of Journalism to take pictures for her upcoming second edition.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Marcee has achieved a remarkable amount of success in a short period of time. Poetry, she hopes, will be her ticket out of a poverty that has haunted her for much of her life and for all of her daughter’s.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Marcee’s tale is empowering. Without much work history or money, but with an abundance of determination and will power, she has managed to carve out a livable niche with her daughter.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">Like a flower growing between the cracks in a sidewalk, Marcee’s talent and acclaim have blossomed in a city notorious for treating its impoverished populace like second-rate citizens.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">But for Marcee, it is the struggle that she wants to inspire people not the success.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14pt;">“I want people to know that it is possible to start with absolutely nothing.”</span></p>Shannon font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">KNOXVILLE –- A team of scientists from the University of Tennessee, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y12 National Security Complex left Sunday to inspect the Hunley to see if they can help unravel the mysteries of the Civil War submarine that sank off the Charleston, S.C., shore 142 years ago.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">The local scientists' involvement has grown out of the relationship between UT and best-selling author <a href="http://www.patriciacornwell.com/">Patricia Cornwell</a>.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">"Ms. Cornwell has been a strong supporter of UT and the National Forensics Academy for the last four years," said Mike Sullivan, director of the Law Enforcement Innovation Center (LEIC), part of UT's Institute for Public Service.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Cornwell recently donated $500,000 to help scientists solve the lingering mystery surrounding the loss of <a href="http://www.hunley.org/">the Hunley and its crew</a>.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Her donation is being used to ensure Hunley scientists have the latest forensic technology as they try to determine what caused the demise of the Confederate submarine. The Hunley disappeared after it successfully sank the USS Housatonic, a Union ship that was involved in the South Atlantic blockade off the Charleston shore. The sunken Hunley and the remains of its crew were discovered in 1995 and raised in 2000, but scientists are still trying to determine why the vessel sank and how its crew died.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">In February, at a press conference in Charleston announcing her donation, Cornwell said the Hunley's sinking is "a 19th century crime scene, where evidence has been corrupted by its underwater environment. We will need to push modern technology to the limit to extract the information that is needed to discover what happened to the Hunley."</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Sullivan said Cornwell recently contacted him to see if scientists from UT, <a href="http://www.ornl.gov/">ORNL</a> and <a href="http://www.y12.doe.gov/">Y12</a> might be able to help with the Hunley.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Cornwell regularly visits UT to talk with crime scene investigators attending training programs at LEIC's acclaimed <a href="http://leic.tennessee.edu/training/nfa.html">National Forensics Academy</a>. NFA instructor Jamie Downs is the medical examiner for the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Hunley case.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">"About a month or so ago, I took Patricia Cornwell to Oak Ridge National Laboratory to help her get acquainted with the tremendous forensic science capabilities there," Sullivan said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Knowing that Hunley researchers are struggling to examine the submarine's sediment-encrusted hull to determine what caused the vessel to sink and what killed its eight crewmen, Cornwell asked Sullivan if local scientists might be able to help by lending their expertise on metals and metallurgy.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Sullivan said he thought local scientists could help.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">"At UT, ORNL and Y12, we have some of the world's leading experts in metals and metallurgy," he said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Cornwell and Maria Jacobsen, an archaeologist from Texas A&M University who is leading the Hunley excavation, recently came to Knoxville to visit scientists from the three institutions. They invited the scientists to travel to Charleston to view the Hunley.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">The group will be in <a href="http://www.discovercharleston.com/attractions/hlhunley.htm">Charleston</a> through Tuesday examining the submarine to determine if they can help researchers peel away the built-up sediment on the vessel's hull. Researchers want to see the damage on submarine's metal surface, figure out what caused it and determine, if possible, what caused the vessel to sink and what killed its eight crewmembers.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">On the evening of Feb. 17, 1864, the Hunley became the world's first successful combat submarine when it sank the Housatonic. That night, after the Hunley's crew signaled to shore that the mission had been accomplished, the submarine and her eight-man crew vanished. Lost at sea for over a century, the sunken Hunley was located in 1995 by Clive Cussler's <a href="http://www.numa.net/press/081300.html">National Underwater and Marine Agency</a>. The hand-cranked vessel was raised in 2000 and delivered to the Warren Lasch Conservation Center in Charleston, where an international team of scientists is trying to preserve the vessel.</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">A bestselling author in more than 35 countries, Patricia Cornwell is a New York Times best-selling author of both fiction and non-fiction. Her most recent No. 1 New York Times bestsellers include the novels "Predator" and "Trace," and her non-fiction book, "Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper -- Case Closed."</span></p> <p><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: "Verdana","sans-serif";">Cornwell published "The Body Farm" in 1994, which attracted worldwide media attention to UT's Forensic Anthropology Center, where scientists and law enforcement personnel study the decomposition of the human body under various conditions. Her new novel, "At Risk," will be published by G.P. Putnams Sons on May 23.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"> </p>Shannon Why is this better or worse than other options? How does the family feel about this? There’s no attribution for the statement: “Diddley's attorney and two agents/managers are seeking to sell the publishing rights to his entire music catalog for $4.3 million to pay off possible tax debts for his estate, estimated to be worth about $6 million.”</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;font-family:times new roman;">In a story that deals with figures and money sums, there’s no crediting of these figures. <span style=""> </span>“The sale of publishing rights would mean Diddley's heirs — six children and 16 grandchildren — would be out about $400,000 a year in record royalties for the next four decades.” Where does this figure come from? How did the reporter come up with it?</p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;font-family:times new roman;">The story mentions court proceedings, and the accompanying photo shows Diddley’s son and granddaughter leaving a courtroom. <span style=""> </span>It’s possible the reporter got much of this information from setting in the courtroom, but this is unclear. <span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;font-family:times new roman;">The story does have creditable sources. One of them is Diddley’s attorney and the trustee of his estate, Ron Stevens. <span style=""> </span>Although, he provides some insight into the proceeding, it is through e-mails, which aren’t a preferred method of interviewing. <span style=""> </span>Another source is the judge in the case, Robert Roundtree, Jr.<span style=""> </span>But, like with other sources in the story, it is unclear whether the quotes are taken from what was said in the courtroom or if the reporter personally interviewed the sources. <span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;font-family:times new roman;">One thing I liked about this story was the reporter obtained a copy of the will from the family. <span style=""> </span>Instead of relying on what either side said about the will, the reporter used independent information to verify the facts. Including the will gives the story credibility and support.<span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;font-family:times new roman;">I think this story’s strength lies in its closeness to the case and proceedings. <span style=""> </span>The reporter went to the courtroom, listened to the facts of the case and the version of events from both the family and the estate trustees.<span style=""> </span>The reporter didn’t rely on getting the information secondhand from a wire service story or a phone interview the next day. <span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;font-family:times new roman;">However, one thing this story could have done better was to better identify where the information was coming from.<span style=""> </span>It’s unclear if the information and the quotes are coming from the court proceeding or from independent, separate interviews. Rick Scott’s unveiling of his new budget this week.<span style=""> </span>Of course, we knew we had to call the Republican and Democratic chairmen of Alachua County, but there was an issue of whether it would be beneficial to interview the local Tea Party about their viewpoint. <span style=""> </span>The issue was especially significant given that Scott announced his budget at a large Tea Party rally in Eustis. <span style=""> </span>In the end, we interviewed all three sides and wrote two separate stories rather than try to cram all the information into one. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Times New Roman";">One thing I gathered from the last weeks’ readings is the importance of accessibility in journalism.<span style=""> </span>Whether it’s writing headlines, coming up with a good nut graph or using effective quotes, reporters and editors must remember that they write stories with the intent that they will be read.<span style=""> </span>If readers can’t connect with a story, then it’s not very likely that they’ll get beyond the first paragraph.<span style=""> </span>Every aspect of a story is equally important because each one plays a part in moving the reader to the end of a story.<span style=""> </span>The headline grabs the reader’s attention, the nut graph gets them beyond the first paragraph and the quotes guide them from graph to graph through to the end.<span style=""> </span></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Times New Roman";"> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; font-family: "Times New Roman";"> </span></p>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-74033180120520258702011-02-12T11:23:00.000-08:002011-02-12T11:28:23.860-08:00Strat12<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> <w:zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:punctuationkerning/> <w:validateagainstschemas/> <w:saveifxmlinvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:ignoremixedcontent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:alwaysshowplaceholdertext>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:compatibility> <w:breakwrappedtables/> <w:snaptogridincell/> <w:wraptextwithpunct/> <w:useasianbreakrules/> <w:dontgrowautofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:donotoptimizeforbrowser/> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:latentstyles deflockedstate="false" latentstylecount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> <h1 style="font-family: times new roman;"><span style="font-size:100%;">Scott's budget spares area state parks</span></h1> <p style="font-family: times new roman;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">http://www.gainesville.com/article/20110209/ARTICLES/110209389/1169?p=1&tc=pg&tc=ar</span></p> <p style="font-family: times new roman;" class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Original- Gov. Miller<br />Staff writer<br /><br /> </div></div> <span style="font-style: italic;">Published in the Gainesville Sun</span> <div> <p> </p><p>A week ago, a man was in tremendous pain when his girlfriend allegedly set his genitals on fire after pouring gasoline on him.</p><p>Days after what seemed like a terrible ordeal, the 42-year-old man has been released from the hospital after undergoing surgery and says the episode was all a misunderstanding.</p><p>"It was an accident," Andrew Williams said in a telephone interview with the Ocala Star-Banner on Saturday afternoon. He added that his girlfriend "didn't know it was going to happen."</p><p>Since his release, Williams' sister, Alice Pierson, and her mother, Helen Colding, told the paper they've not seen or heard from their loved one since Wednesday.</p><p>In fact, both mother and daughter said after his surgery, they had plans to pick him up from Shands at the University of Florida on Thursday. But Pierson said when she called the hospital, an official told her they had nobody by that name in their system.</p><p>After going back and forth with the official, Pierson said she hung up. Unable to locate her brother, Pierson said she heard her brother's girlfriend, 29-year-old Victoria Bynes, who was arrested by deputies for aggravated battery for allegedly setting her boyfriend's genitals on fire, had picked him up from the hospital and that he was staying with her.</p><p>"We heard he was staying with her. I know my brother is a grown man and can make his own decision, but at least call us," Pierson said.</p><p>Reached by phone, Colding said she has not seen or heard from her son.</p><p>Williams told the Star-Banner that Bynes "came and got me," and he assured the paper that "no charges will be filed," something his sister feared would happen.</p><p>"We've been together for a long time," Williams said of his relationship with Bynes.</p><p>Williams said his family had visited him in the hospital and claimed nobody told him "nothing" about the fire.</p><p>Asked if he and Bynes had been arguing before the incident took place, Williams said "no." Asked if she had gasoline in a bottle, Williams terminated the interview, saying he had to go.</p><p>"It's very sad," said Pierson. "It hurts me because it hurts my mother. Yes, he's grown, and he can do whatever he wants, but it hurts my mother and when that happens, it hurts me." Pierson said their mother is sickly and that she worries about her children.</p><p>Bynes could not be reached for comment.</p><p>Colding said her son and Bynes do not have any children and that Bynes has treated her "good" during Bynes' relationship with Williams. She said she was at home when Bynes came there and asked to speak to her son.</p><p>After being told he was not there, she said Bynes told her that Williams had "some explaining to do." She said Bynes left, saying she was going to "do her niece's hair."</p><p>Colding said Bynes has called and apologized.</p><p>"She said she was sorry," said Colding, adding that she has forgiven Bynes.</p><p>Even though she has forgiven Bynes, she said, "I can't be around her now. She hurt my whole family."</p><p><br /></p><p>If given this story, I would question whether it belonged in the paper. It's certainly an interesting story, but there's not much news value in it. I think the initial report was good enough, but a follow-up about the couple is not necessary. Specifically, I would question the appropriateness of adding family drama to a news story. If I had written this story, I would have tried to investigate a possible domestic violence angle. Many victims of domestic abuse return to their abusers despite knowing the possible consequences. Is this one of those cases? To find more answers, I might talk to the investigating officer and an abuse counselor.<br /></p><p>1.Who are the people affected?</p><p>The man, Andrew Williams, whose genitals were set on fire and, to an extent, his family. <br /></p><p>2. How are people affected or how might they be affected?</p><p>I think the story tries to turn the incident into an issue of community concern by just including interviews with the family. To more completely do this, the reporter could investigate if this was the first incident between the couple and, if so, discuss the prevalence of victims returning to abusive partners.<br /></p><p>3. Why are you writing this?</p><p>To inform the community on an interesting and unexpected development in an earlier-published incident. </p><p>4. Who are the bureaucrats?</p><p>The bureaucrats are doctors at Shands at the University of Florida and possibly the officers who investigated the original incident.<br /></p><p>5. What are the key questions?</p><p>-Why did the victim return to his girlfriend?</p><p>-Were any charges filed against her?</p><p>-If so, is it legal for him to return to her?</p><p>-Are there any avenues the family can take to protect the son if they feel it is necessary?</p><p>6. What research must you do?</p><p>The reporter could look at the incident report or talk to the police and girlfriend about what happened. <br /></p><p>7. Where can you go?</p><p>For this story, the reporter can request the incident report from the Public Information Officer at the police. He or she can also interview the PIO over the phone or in person.<br /></p><p>8. What are you missing?</p><p>If I were to investigate the domestic violence aspect, I would contact and interview an abuse counselor. Williams' refusal to answer his family's questions makes he wonder if there's a part of this story that is being missed. The fact that the victim is male makes some people less likely to think about abuse, but it is something that should be looked at.<br /></p><p>9. How can you be creative?</p><p>The reporter could look at other domestic violence incidents statistics for the county and find out if it is common for victims to return to their abusers. This could be part of a follow-up story or an enterprise story.<br /></p><p>10. What is your vision?</p><p>This story could be used to investigate the occurrence of male victim/female abuser cases. This is something that is not looked it very often, and a story would be an interesting way to educate the public about such incidents. More information from the police and an expert on domestic violence could help achieve this. <br /></p></div></div>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-37258278261082303452011-01-16T14:15:00.000-08:002011-01-16T14:16:31.694-08:00Case Study 2<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> <w:zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:punctuationkerning/> <w:validateagainstschemas/> <w:saveifxmlinvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:ignoremixedcontent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:alwaysshowplaceholdertext>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:compatibility> <w:breakwrappedtables/> <w:snaptogridincell/> <w:wraptextwithpunct/> <w:useasianbreakrules/> <w:dontgrowautofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:browserlevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:latentstyles deflockedstate="false" latentstylecount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">When dealing with an unexpected situation that interrupts the everyday flow of the newsroom, it is important for a news organization to have a crisis plan.<span style=""> </span>A crisis plan is helpful because it can provide structure and order during a time that may become chaotic and uncertain.<span style=""> </span>When events like natural disasters and shootings happen, the public is looking to the media to provide as much information as quickly as possible.<span style=""> </span>Having a plan allows a news group to keep up with a story rather than letting it get away.<span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">In a case like the Tucson shootings, the first thing I would have done as an editor would be to send a pair of reporters and a photographer to the scene of the crime and to the hospital.<span style=""> </span>In a widely publicized event like this one, the are bound to be a lot of other reporters looking to interview officials and witnesses.<span style=""> </span>It’s likely the reporters would have to wait for officials to release certain information, either at the scene of the crime or at a separate location for a press conference.<span style=""> </span>Of course, the reporters would need to find out the basic information about the case, including, how many people were hurt/ killed, is the suspect in custody, who is the suspect and is there still a threat of more violence. Once these first questions are answered, the information would be written into a quick story and posted immediately to the website.<span style=""> </span>Next, the reporters would dig a little deeper to find out more information (what was the shooter’s motive, who is he, who was his target, who were the victims, etc.).<span style=""> </span>This information is important to know but is not pressing.<span style=""> </span>To answer these questions, the reporters would probably look to talk to Gabrielle Giffords’ family, her office and aides, the family of the other victims and the shooter’s family.<span style=""> </span>One avenue that shouldn’t be overlooked is social networking sites.<span style=""> </span>If the shooter had a Facebook or Myspace account, a blog or a website, then they could provide insight into his motives and the type of person he is.<span style=""> </span>It’s necessary to look at these right away and save them because in a case like this, law enforcement officials would want to close them off immediately.<span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">Another important thing to do is to maintain the lines of communication between the newsroom and the reports who were sent out.<span style=""> </span>When there’s an update it needs to be put on the website.<span style=""> </span>There should probably be at least one in-house person responsible for keeping the website’s information updated and fresh.<span style=""> </span>The important thing to do in crisis cases is to be accurate and timely.<span style=""> </span>Having a plan lets a news group do both in an efficient and organized way. </p>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-8288493576070757652011-01-09T14:08:00.000-08:002011-01-09T14:10:04.462-08:00Case Study 1<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> <w:zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:punctuationkerning/> <w:validateagainstschemas/> <w:saveifxmlinvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:ignoremixedcontent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:alwaysshowplaceholdertext>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:compatibility> <w:breakwrappedtables/> <w:snaptogridincell/> <w:wraptextwithpunct/> <w:useasianbreakrules/> <w:dontgrowautofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:browserlevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:latentstyles deflockedstate="false" latentstylecount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]--> <p class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: 18pt; font-family: Arial;">Eagle Snatches Dog While Owner Watches </span></b><span style="font-family: Arial;"></span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Valdez, Alaska -- A bald eagle satisfied its hunger at a Valdez gas station when it snatched up a small dog and flew away, leaving the dog's owner screaming in horror. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">The chihuahua-like dog had been let out of a motor home to run around in the station's parking lot while the owners, an unidentified couple from Georgia, cleaned the vehicle's windshield. </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-family: Arial;">Witnesses said the pet was about 5 feet away from the RV when the eagle swooped down from a perch in a nearby tree. A story like this is probably more suited for a small-town or weekly paper than a larger daily.<span style=""> </span>The story is also well-written but frivolous.<span style=""> </span>Why would a dog-snatching matter to anyone other than the owners?<span style=""> </span>Unless the man and woman were tabloid celebrities like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, then most people would not bother to read this story and thus it has no place in most newspapers.<span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">Also, if this incident were a part of a larger trend of giant birds scooping up household pets, then one could argue that it has a justifiable place in the local paper.<span style=""> </span>However, a fact like that isn’t mentioned in the story. <span style=""> </span></p> <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: 0.5in;">The article reads more like an interesting vacation story than a news story.<span style=""> </span>Depending on the style of the paper that published it (preference for local human interest stories, size, etc.), then the story may have only a small degree of newsworthiness. </p>Shannon Parrishhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00025366530632787659noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5743428984376394436.post-12787570807068207382011-01-09T13:51:00.000-08:002011-01-09T14:02:45.235-08:00Who are you?<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:worddocument> <w:view>Normal</w:View> <w:zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:punctuationkerning/> <w:validateagainstschemas/> <w:saveifxmlinvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:ignoremixedcontent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:alwaysshowplaceholdertext>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:compatibility> <w:breakwrappedtables/> <w:snaptogridincell/> <w:wraptextwithpunct/> <w:useasianbreakrules/> <w:dontgrowautofit/> </w:Compatibility> <w:browserlevel>MicrosoftInternetExplorer4</w:BrowserLevel> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:latentstyles deflockedstate="false" latentstylecount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal";
